Orlando Shooting A Tragic Night A Look at the Orlando Pulse Nightclub Shooting

Orlando Shooting: It was a terrorising night on June 12, 2016 when 29 year old American born Afghan Omar Mateen entered Pulse a popular Orlando, Florida nightclub catering mainly to the community. The massacres lasted over 3 hours and along with the 53 others casualties were dead.

The Timeline of Horror

  • The Attack:Around 2:00 AM, Mateen entered Pulse wielding an AR-15 style assault rifle and a handgun. He opened fire on the crowd, took hostages and barricaded himself inside the nightclub.
  • The Stand-off: Mateen and police were at a stand-off for a time. The club was surrounded by SWAT teams, with attempts to negotiate Mateen’s surrender.
  • The Last Attack: 3 hours police chooses to penetrate the club. Mateen was killed in the final standoff with police.

The Aftermath and Its Effects

At the time, the shooting at Pulse nightclub was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, and reverberated throughout both the community as well as broader swathes of society. It sparked a national dialogue about gun control, terrorism and hate crimes.

It also highlighted the continued plight of the community particularly with regard to discrimination and violence. Following this, several memorials and vigils were conducted in memory of the victims and the community.
