Michael Thomas Exposition
Michael Thomas was a bigger star than most in the NFL. Once an OPOY and one of the league’s top receivers, Thomas has fallen off a cliff recently. The injuries and drama off the field have been here.
The Rise of a Star
Thomas was a rookie as an instant impact receiver after being drafted in the 2nd round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. His route running along with his hands and catch radius combined to make him a real headache for any defense. He had 149 receptions for 1,497 yards, both single season marks at the time, in 2019.
The Decline
Well, hold up; that decline started in 2020. It kept Thomas out for a majority of the year with a high ankle sprain needing multiple operations. The injury had long-term ramifications for the tight end’s playing time and performance in 2021 and 2022, as he faced a series of physical ailments.
Off Field Issues
Beyond injuries, though, Thomas has dealt with some off-field matters as well. 2023 Divorce from QB Derek Carr He had his share of public flareups with teammates and coaches, too including with his initial quarterback Derek Carr. All of this has clouded his image and put a big question mark on his professionalism as well.
The Future is Unknown
Michael Thomas: Uncertain. (At least for the NFL) The Saints are on the hook for money until some time after 2024, but who knows if his “old” self is a thing again or not. Once a bright career, now marked by injuries and antics off the field.
Not sure what the future holds from here on out for Michael Thomas but his career has taken a hard left into Gritty-ville. Will he finally overcome and return to being him?
