Catches of the Year Garrett Wilson Goes One-Handed
- Thursday night in November 2023 was quite something for the NFL. Welcome to “Oh My Gosh,” NFL Edition, the weekly landing spot for plays that pique the “Holy “Hey, look at that” meter. (Thanks, Jeff and Eagles fans New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson wrote a page for the record books with a one-handed grab Sunday against the Houston Texans.
- 4th quarter, Jets behind the eight ball, running out of time. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was pressured and threw the ball deep and toward the end zone. Wilson leapt high, reached up with a right arm and snagged the ball mid-air with one hand. The ball settled into his stomach and Wilson touched down in bounds for the touchdown and the crowd went wild.
- The catch was a work of art. It was one of those moments that transcended football, and everyone was mesmerised. As was the most recent replay, and dissected at all angles, it displayed the tremendous physical and skill aspect involved in accomplishing such a play. But, it was Wilson who caught it in incredible fashion, adjusting his body in mid air to remain focused on the ball and make the catch in tight coverage.
- The play went viral and was reported everywhere on social media and sports news outlets across the globe. It was likened to some of the NFL all-time most notorious catches, including Odell Beckham Jr’s one handed grab. But a lot of people felt Wilson’s was even better, considering the degree of difficulty and accuracy needed to make that play.
He will never forget this moment in his career. When you combine his speed and agility and his hands, defensively you have a nightmare with the dual threat. His one handed catch vs the Texans will be what defines his career. It was a tribute to how crazy and special this league is.
