You could say Daniel Romanchuk is a name that goes together with the following: speed, determination, Paralympic champion. It just so happens, the 26-year-old Romanchuk was born with spina bifida, a neutral-tube defect that affects your spine and your nerves, and despite all that, he has achieved international greatness.
Daniel Romanchuk Early Start and Fast Track
Starting at an early age, Romanchuk is from Mount Airy, Maryland. He was introduced into adaptive sports at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, where he tried archery, sled hockey, you name it until he found the sport that was his: wheelchair racing.
From the very beginning, he had lots of talent and dedication. He was breaking age group records at the age of 6 and racing in national competitions. His ambitions grew with maturity. He trained at the University of Illinois under coach Adam Bleakney where he came into his own becoming a world beater.
A List of Accolades
There have been many highlights in the career of Romanchuk. He has shattered records, completed marathons across the globe, His 2018 campaign was at his highest, he perfect the event’s men’s mobility race to become both the inaugural American and the youngest champion in the event’s history at 21 years of age.
In 2019, he kept his winning streak going by winning the Boston, London and Chicago Marathons. This made him the youngest to have ever won a Grand Slam of major marathons.
Paralympic Career
Romanchuk himself has an equally impressive Paralympic resume. His first taste of a Paralympic appearance came with the Rio Games of 2016. He clinched bronze in the men’s marathon T54 and gold in the 400m T54 in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Off the track he’s a student. He enjoys applying math to practical applications in engineering and tech. He aims to use his knowledge and platform to improve the design and technology of racing wheelchairs and test the boundaries of performance and innovation.
